A variety of Occupational Safety and Health Administration training courses will soon be offered at East Mississippi Community College’s Communiversity, which will serve as a Host Training Organization for Eastern Kentucky University’s OSHA Training Institute Education Center in Richmond, Kentucky.

Tentative plans are to begin offering the courses at the Communiversity in July.

“This is a service that will benefit not only our local businesses and industries, but our state and region as well,” EMCC Communiversity Executive Director Dr. Courtney Taylor said. “This agreement will expand our current offerings and make it much more convenient for many in our area and beyond who are in need of OSHA training.”

The OSHA Training Institute Education Center (OTIEC) at Eastern Kentucky University is one of 26 centers comprising a national network of non-profit organizations authorized by OSHA to deliver occupational safety and health training to public and private sector workers, supervisors, and employers.

“Eastern Kentucky University is delighted to collaborate with East Mississippi Community College to expand our OSHA training,” EKU Assistant Vice President University Outreach and Engagement Jill Price said. “We are eager to realize the additional safety training opportunities the relationship will bring to OSHA Region IV, enabling increased potential to educate, protect and prepare American workers for the hazards they may encounter in the workplace. This partnership is another example that EKU truly strives to meet the training and educational needs of students everywhere.” 

Courses available through EKU OTIEC provide certification and specific training in construction, healthcare, manufacturing and hospitality OSHA requirements. Technical courses on high hazards, occupational safety and environmental compliance topics offer training in the latest health and safety standards.

OSHA numbered courses provide certification and specific training in construction, healthcare, and general industry OSHA standards. Trainer courses provide authorization to teach OSHA 10 and 30 hour Outreach classes.  Elective topic courses provide students with an expanded overview of specific safety issues and standards. 

Students may register for the OSHA courses now at https://osha.eku.edu/training-locations . Classes are anticipated to begin July 1.  Course offerings are subject to change due to Covid-19 social distancing guidelines.

EMCC will continue to provide separate OSHA training through the college’s Workforce and Community Services Division that meets local industry needs and complements available course offerings.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the demand for OSHA training is great, with more than 305,000 participants trained through the education centers between fiscal year 2004 and fiscal year 2013. The closest OTIEC to the Golden Triangle is located at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

Established in 2003, Eastern Kentucky University's OSHA Training Institute Education Center serves the eight-state Region IV comprised of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

July – August 2020 Course Offerings

OSHA 511 General Industry Standards

This 26 hour course covers OSHA Standards, policies, and procedures in general industry. Topics include scope and application of the OSHA General Industry Standards, general industry principles and special emphasis on those areas in general industry which are most hazardous. Upon course completion, students will have the ability to define general industry terms found in the OSHA General Industry Standards, identify hazards which occur in general industry, locate and determine appropriate OSHA General Industry Standards, policies, and procedures, and describe the use of OSHA General Industry Standards and regulations to supplement an ongoing safety and health program.

OSHA 510 Construction Standards

This 26 hour course covers OSHA Standards, policies, and procedures in the construction industry. Topics include scope and application of the OSHA Construction Standards, construction safety and health principles, and special emphasis on those areas in construction which are most hazardous. Upon course completion, students will have the ability to define construction terms found in the OSHA Construction Standards, identify hazards which occur in the construction industry, locate and determine appropriate OSHA Construction Standards, policies, and procedures, and describe the use of the OSHA Construction Standards and regulations to supplement an ongoing safety and health program.

September – October 2020 Course Offerings

OSHA 501 General Industry Trainer

This course is designed for individuals interested in teaching the 10- and 30-hour general industry safety and health Outreach training program to their employees and other interested groups. Using the OSHA General Industry Standards as a guide, special emphasis is placed on those topics required in the 10- and 30-hour programs as well as those which are most hazardous. Students are briefed on effective instructional approaches and use of visual aids and handouts. This course allows the student to become a trainer in the OSHA Outreach Training Program, to conduct both 10- and 30-hour General Industry Outreach classes, and to issue cards to participants after verifying course completion. Students who wish to participate as authorized trainers in the OSHA Outreach Training Program must prepare a presentation on an assigned OSHA General Industry Outreach Training Program topic individually or as part of a group and successfully pass a written exam at the end of the course.

OSHA 500 Construction Trainer

This 26 hour course is designed for individuals interested in teaching the 10- and 30-hour construction safety and health Outreach Training Program to their employees and other interested groups. Using OSHA Construction Standards as a guide, special emphasis is placed on those topics required in the 10- and 30-hour programs as well as those which are most hazardous. November 2020 – Early 2021 Course Offerings

OSHA 502 Construction Trainer Update

This 18 hour course is designed for Outreach Training Program trainers who have completed OSHA #500 Trainer Course in Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Construction Industry and are authorized trainers in the OSHA Outreach Training Program. The course provides an update on OSHA Construction Standards, policies, and regulations. Upon course completion, students will have the ability to demonstrate continued professional development in their field by applying effective adult learning principles and interactive training techniques to clearly identify, define, and explain construction industry hazards and acceptable corrective measures as they continue to teach the 10- and 30-hour Construction Outreach Training Program classes.

OSHA 503 General Industry Trainer Update

This 18 hour course is designed for Outreach Training Program trainers who have completed course #501 Trainer Course in Occupational Safety and Health Standards for General Industry and who are authorized trainers in the OSHA Outreach Training Program. The course provides an update on OSHA General Industry Standards, policies, and regulations. Upon course completion, students will have the ability to demonstrate continued professional development in their field by applying effective adult learning principles and interactive training techniques to clearly identify, define, and explain general industry hazards and acceptable corrective measures as they continue to teach the 10- and 30- hour General Industry Outreach Training Program classes.

OSHA 7845 Recordkeeping

This 4 hour course covers OSHA requirements for maintaining and posting records of occupational injuries and illnesses, and reporting specific cases to OSHA. Upon course completion, students will have the ability to identify OSHA requirements for recordkeeping, posting and reporting and to complete OSHA Form 300 Log of Work-Related Injuries and Illness, OSHA Form 300A Summary of Work-related Injuries and Illness, and OSHA Form 301 Injury and Illness Incident Report.

OSHA 3095 Electrical Standards

This 26 hour course covers OSHA Electrical Standards and the hazards associated with electrical installations and equipment. Course topics include single- and three-phase systems, cord- and plug-connected and fixed equipment, grounding, ground fault circuit interrupters, and safety-related work practices. Emphasis is placed on electrical hazard recognition and OSHA Standards, policies, and procedures and applicable portions of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Students will participate in workshops on the safe and correct use of electrical testing equipment. Upon course completion students will have the ability to understand the severity of electrical current on the human body, recognize and evaluate actual and potential electrical hazards and reference the applicable OSHA Standard, determine hazard abatement measures, and understand the proper use of electrical testing equipment.

OSHA 2264 Permit-Required Confined Space

This 20 hour course covers the safety and health hazards associated with permit-required confined space entry. Course topics include recognition of confined space hazards, identification of permit and non-permit required confined spaces, use of instrumentation to evaluate atmospheric hazards, ventilation techniques, development and implementation of a confined space program, proper signage, and training requirements. This course features workshops on permit entry classification, instrumentation, and program development. Upon course completion, students will have the ability to identify permit and non-permit required confined spaces, reference the OSHA Permit-Required Confined Spaces Standard, conduct atmospheric testing, and implement a permit-required confined space program.
